Emma introduces Harry Neal, 63, an existential dropout cursed with a trouble inducing curiosity.
Harry's lazy day is interrupted when a friend hauls him to a shallow grave in the woods and shows him a skeleton with a bullet hole in its skull. Aided by persistence and the occasional dollop of cheap wine, he follows a vague trail of hints back twenty years. Along the way he questions an eclectic group of characters, is witness to human ruin, and pays $170,000 for a cat.
Emma #1 The Harry Neal and Cat Mystery Series eBook Bentley Dadmun
"Emma" is the first of nine books in the Harry and Cat series to be found on Kindle. Think of this as a nine course meal that should be enjoyed in the proper order for full enjoyment, beginning with the before dinner wine. (Harry loves wine.) Start with "Emma" for the beginning of Harry Neal and Cat's relationship and progress through "Angie," "Annie's Dream," "Harry's Lament," "Short Round," "Sister's," "Sophie's Gambit," and "Harry's Game" to finish with "Dead Dead Dead, The Little Girl Said." The first eight are really novellas and the last is a full length mystery novel. The author says the first three, in particular, should be read in order. I've arranged the others as I would and did read them.If you like cat mysteries but have had enough of librarians, book store owners, antique shop owners, professors and middle aged ladies snuggling up to the town constable, cats who are bigger than the average cat, tougher than the average cat, speak English, are clairvoyant, walk through walls or are generally smarter than their human companions, you are ready for and will love Bentley Dadmun's Harry and Cat. Harry is a believable guy who is facing geezerhood and has told the world to shove it. Cat is just cat. I'll say no more to spoil the reading experience.
Trust me, take it from the top, get to know Harry and Cat book by book and you may find yourself, as I did, finishing up this literary feast at 4:18 AM in the morning saying, "Damn, that was fun!"

Emma #1 The Harry Neal and Cat Mystery Series eBook Bentley Dadmun Reviews
I loved this book! I got into it immediately. Being a cat lover, I enjoyed Harry relationship with his kitty. This was fast paced, humorous & thoroughly entertaining. I rarely give a book 5 stars, this is 5 stars +.
The first of 3 books to get you started in the Harry Neal and Cat Mystery Series, the second Angie and the third Annie's Dream. Although these stories are independent of one another reading them in this order gives a better understanding of the series characters and how they interact. I have read all three and intend to read many more. Emma is a short mystery story that can be easily read in one or two session. No wasted words, just the right amount to get the point made and the characters visual in your mind's eye. Fast moving and catchy, humorous original phrases. Not a boring moment.
This was an okay book and it was interesting to see how Cat joined Harry; but I probably wouldn't have pursued the series if it was the first book I read. I think DEAD DEAD THE LITTLE GIRL SAID is much better.
Great story line, packed with philosophical insights. No pretention, no thriller surrealistic drama, just simple logic in the style of old roman noir style. Quite dary to choose a middle age hero surrounded not by glamour but old and poor people and be someone living out of the "system"..
Mr. Dadmun, congratulations for your marketing success, even with less than 40 pages, I'm quite happy to buy your books- they bring me so much more than 300 pages of stereotyped mumbo jumbo detective lingo!
Start Right Here's review of the book Emma (and the entire series) truly says exactly how I feel about this series, great writing, great characters, the first 8 are novellas. I don't usually like novellas because they never seem to have enough detail to make me care about the characters...., these read like a full fledged novel and I didn't feel shortchanged at all. The first one "Emma" was so good, I immediately bought the rest of the series and am really excited about the ninth book Dead Dead Dead The Little Girl Said, it's a full blown novel.
I downloaded this volume after reading "Dead...dead...dead" because I so loved the delightful writing style and the quirky characters. This was the first in the series and I've backtracked to start at the beginning. It is definitely worth reading. I was rather shocked to find that this is more of a 'long short story' than a true book - I started and finished reading it in only around 2 hours so it left me wanting more. There are also some wierd mistakes - one does not BRAKE a mug but rather BREAK a mug dear author! However I do not hesitate to recommend folks pick this one up for a delightful...break...from a stressful day.
What I really want to know is this. WHO ARE YOU OH AUTHOR!! Clearly the name is not your own but I am most curious about you - such a particular and unusual suite of characters and situations and place. how interesting indeed.
In Emma, the first Harry Neal and Cat Story, Harry is handed a mystery in the form of a skeleton and jeweled pin buried in a shallow grave. Harry lives by himself on a New Hampshire farm in a sailboat permanently parked in the woods. Also on the farm is a converted house/barn structure housing 50 residents who, like Harry, are eking out an existence on Social Security checks. We are also introduced to the small nearby town and the town residents that are players in this and the other Harry Neal stories. During the story, Harry discovers a mortally injured cat, who is saved by Harry and his landlord who is a retired veterinarian and becomes "Cat". Cat and Harry become inseparable friends.
The mystery is interesting in its own right and is slowly revealed as Harry starts with one clue and investigates the old murder. Harry's path to justice is part of the surprise in the end. The story itself is even more interesting, though, because of the rich character and background development in the story. Despite the shortness, by the end of the story you feel like you are part of it. Dadmun has the ability to create background characters in depth with just two or three sentences and main characters with just a few scenes. This story is a lot like those written by O. Henry a hundred years ago. If you liked his stories you will probably like this one as well.
