In the right hands, this book could make a great Grant/Hepburn type screwball comedy movie. The scene where the third gorilla appears on the doorstep is a moment right out of a great Marx Brothers movie.The book is a bit wordy at times, describing each step in detail in a scene. This may be a literary device to convey a deadpan delivery to build up to a low-key punch line, but it seems a bit overdone on occasion.

Mr. Fitzgerald does it again! I finished this book in no time - I couldn't put it down! It's intelligent and witty; it gives you a good healthy dose of the truth laced with hilarious comedy. If only the solution to the stupidity pervading the populace were as simple as de-contaminating the drinking water...oh well...
In VIVA LA EVOLUCION, Jack Fitzgerald takes great glee in skewering right wing radicals while presenting an absurdist, while not totally implausible, conspiracy theory about what may be dumbing down Americans at an alarming rate. His characters are richly drawn and all immediately lovable -- especially the ones that you love to hate! In particular, his Anne Coulter stand-in, herein dubbed Anne "Coolidge" puts Cruella deVille to shame as the new archetype for comic villainesses. I loved the mixture of fact and fantasy, and stayed up late every night way past my bedtime turning pages to discover the next brilliant plot twist. The last 60 pages, in particular, are like a roller coaster ride through a carnival fun house, presented so matter of factly that you can't help but be swept in. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Could this story possibly offer a reasonable explanation for the burgeoning booboisie in our society? Oftentimes, it has been said that "it's probably something in the water" as a convenient excuse for the "dumbing down" of a civilization. The author adroitly maneuvers a scientific tale with a richly- woven tapestry of colorful characters that at times makes the story sound both feasible and plausible. Highly recommend this book...along with the immediate purchase of a good water filter!
VIVA LA EVOLUCION weaves together fiction with facts, true statistics, actual news items and, in a timely and satirical fashion, raises all the right questions about the very real "dumbing down" issue in America. It is a very readable book and wittily navigates us through the premise that slowly but surely our population is headed toward becoming a nation of knuckle draggers -- a real cultural evolution. With edgy social commentary and using Pongo the ape as one of the main characters, we see the danger and evil of our present-day set of circumstances in the United States. It's funny, it's provocative, it's disheartening, it's exaggerated, it's entertaining and it is right on target. This book would make a terrific film!
It's ridiculous, absurd, impossible; but oh so true! Jack Fitzgerald has written a modern day myth that sums up the state of our society. Zany characters populate his novel in much the same way that the Marx Brothers dominated the cinema. The crazier the situations appear to be, the closer they are to events in our modern world. The characters may be zany but they are believable. The book mirrors our world of numbskulls, pundits, hair brained scientists, and tea-party enthusiasts. The ape wins in the end and we are all better off as a result. You will enjoy this book. It will make you laugh out loud.
