After a series of risky black ops missions, Steve is looking forward to a straightforward intelligence assignment in beautiful Israel. What he finds is a conspiracy that will rock the Middle East and the world. He also finds Neena Shahud, an attractive Mossad agent waging a personal vendetta against Hezbollah. First Steve must save Neena’s life, then he must figure out why the Middle East is about to explode and stop it. But, by the time Steve and Neena put the pieces in place, it may be too late. If Masada, an historic fortress, the object of an oath taken by the Israel’s elite soldiers, and a symbol of Jewish freedom is not to fall to enemies a second time, what will be the price? Who will pay it?

A good spy novel, somewhat held back by the writing style. This could have used some better editing than it got but I don't find the problems all that bad, unlike some of the reviewers on here.

I especially like the fact that the main opponent isn't your typical evildoer, but rather a misguided good guy. So many books have opponents that are basically one-dimensional evil, it's refreshing to find one whose motives actually make sense, however wrong his read of the situation is.

I do have a problem at the end, though. A recurring theme has been the US not understanding the situation over there (unlike some others I don't have a problem with this--it's critical to understanding the "bad" guy.) but then in the end he shows he still doesn't get it. The attempt to impose peace over there will be a total failure.

The Masada Protocol Lee C Broad 9780983540113 Books Reviews

This was a promising book, with a great start. It went downhill fast after the two main characters fell in love. That read like a 14 year old's fantasy. If foreplay to you is drawn out geo-political discussions, this book is for you. If mind numbing descriptions of designer clothing, fine wines or fancy appetizers are your ticket to titillation, get on board.

The action sequences are well written. There is some fun here, but I found myself laughing out loud at the inane attempts to infuse adult relationships into the book.
If you like David Baldaci, Daniel Silva, and Vince Flynn then get your favorite beverage and some popcorn and sit back for some real entertainment. The story was captivating, exciting, pulse pounding and could be from the front page of your newspaper. Once you begin reading you will not tolerate real world interuptions lightly. I feel like I actually met the characters. I can see them now in my minds eye and almost hear themn talking. They were real peoople. The group planning mass devastation have a human side that has an emotional impact that I have never experienced through reading before. The group that hates western civilization meets an unexpected fate and experiences justice shaped by the tenets of their own values.

This reading experience is like watching a Denzel Washington movie that takes place in the wide open space of your imagination. I cannot wait for Mr Broad to pen his next adventure. Happy reading.

I love the Steve character because he doesn't take anything personally, even the manner by which he was treated by Israeli authorities. Though a spy and he does kill, I also like the part where he shows that he respects innocent creatures, e.g. stray dog.I mean who thinks of NOT shooting a dog but shooting him w/ some tranquilizer gun instead and I like the gesture where he carries the dog to the side of the street. Yes he kills terrorists but these are not innocent people. The writing is fast paced and it's as current as what is happening today.I also like the part when the US Ambassador to Israel admits that it seems that even Israel's friend's seem to be forgetting them and cites that despite the so-called friendship, the UN seems more into prosecuting Israel despite the fact that obviously other countries have terrible human rights records. I also loved the character Neena, not because she kills, but because she has FIRE inside her -- I mean, who wouldn't act that way if your whole family were killed by terrorists? I was not happy about the bloody hospital scene, but then one has to ask, would anyone have done the same if your whole family were killed by Hezbollah? I like the way the writer describes the different scenes. This spy story is thrilling from start to end. There's a lot killings true, but this is a spy thriller so that is to be expected -- the romance softened the story a bit, and was a rather pleasant twist. Would certainly recommend book to anyone who loves spy thrillers.
Two and a half stars.

Overall, the premise of the book is interesting, and not outside the realm of reality--a rogue outfit of the Israeli army wants to preemptively strike on all the troublesome Middle East countries such as Iran, Syria, Egypt and Libya, and wipe them off the face of the earth, before they can do the same to Israel.
Enter a US Marine/spy, and beautiful Israeli spy/revenge killer, and so on. The characters were slightly cardboard-ish. All Marines are good. Marine investment bankers are good too. So is the US military. They didn't seem to struggle with anything very much, and just did all the 'right' things and took all the correct actions that are expected of the US Marines. I was hoping for a little more humanity and imperfection in the main characters. The homicidal Israeli spy Neena seemed just a bit too nuts.
The action sequences were well written, however, I felt that the book was dragged down by frequent and needless descriptions of ammo, weapons and military knives, as well as the clunky, forced dialogue. Pretty much none of the dialogue sounded 'natural', but read more like a movie script. Furthermore, the thoughts of the characters, written in Italics, were borderline comical--"what a guy!", "what a woman!", "I hope we make it", "I can get used to it"...and so on. They were unnecessary and detracted from the overall flow of the book.
Finally, and that is my biggest complaint about the book, it just did not seem plausible that the Israelis would simply give up the reins of arguably the biggest military operation (in importance) in history to a group of Americans. The Israelis seemed like a bunch of hapless schmucks, stumbling about, not knowing who is in charge, and who is taking control of ALL of their nuclear arsenal, while at the end, it took a group of American marines to figure everything out, determine the course of action AND execute it, on Israeli soil, while leaving most Israelis behind, as 'observers'.
The secondary story in The Masada Protocol, that of the financial/Iran angle was a lot more interesting, and I wished that it was developed further and given the time that it deserved. But then it didn't require laundry lists of ammo, so it seemed like the author didn't know where to go with it, and kind of quickly tied all the loose ends, so he could return to the less effective 'action' sequences.
This is not a bad read, and with a little tweaking and character development, The Masada Protocol would make a great book.
